That day, the rain and intense cold did not allow the Indian dance to take place, this dance is done by semi-naked people that jump in the strangest ways and the grimaces, bizarre transformations and ridiculous attitudes help create a beautiful celebration; that ceremony was postponed, and so I was not able to attend it.
Apart from the pipe dance that is performed while having a calumet in one hand and smoking a k’nick k'neck, the natives do a lot of other ceremonial dances that are descripted and pictured by Catlin, and I would like to talk briefly about them. There’s a dance called poor dance, there’s another called slaves dance, there’s also one that is done to celebrate dogs; the war dance precedes the departure for the battlefield, the snowshoes dance is done when the first snow covers the prairies, there are special dances that are used to celebrate the sun, the hunting, the corn, and the scalp. The corn dance is done as soon as the corn ripens: a small quantity of it is boiled and given to the Big Spirit as a sacrifice, the rest of the harvest is kept for the celebration. The natives are insatiable and there’s no limit in the quantity of corn that can be eaten in that circumstance: for this reason, the celebration can often last for more than a day and since the quantity of harvested corn is not abundant, almost all of it is eaten to celebrate the beginning of maturation. The scalp dance exists only in the wildest tribes that still continue to adorn themselves with the enemies’ scalps.

</div><div class="box-container">Black Bird, or Vash-ing-guh-sah-ba in Omahas’ language, is considered by some writers as a personification of barbarity and natives’ slyness. It has been passed on that Black Bird discovered the infamous properties of arsenic thanks to a leather merchant that gave him a small quantity of it; Black Bird fooled everyone making them believe that he had supernatural powers, like predicting the death of those who disputed his authority, where, in reality, he secretly gave them this drug.
Black Bird’s tribe became famous thanks to his power and lots of victories in the battlefield, for this reason every time someone dared to insult one of them, Black Bird would avenge him.
Black Bird was kept as prisoner by the Sioux at the beginning of his career as Omahas’ chieftain, then he became one of their worst nightmares. Someday, while he was chasing some enemies, he frequently fired shots to the fugitives’ footprints reassuring his soldiers that they would have reached and killed them before dark; he became famous as soon as he managed to do that.
Black Bird had a proud soul but also a sensible heart. He swore he would kill all the Ponkas because of their raids in Omahas territories. Right before their defeat, they sent peace heralds that have been killed as soon as they arrived to the Omahas border. The Ponkas were desperate, so their chieftain thought to send his daughter to Black Bird. She gave him a peace pipe and she made him fall in love with her because she was very young and attractive; the two tribes became allies from then on, as I have had the opportunity to see.
After some years, the girl became the queen of Black Bird’s Wigwan and she gave birth to a child: Black Bird killed the woman he loved more than himself while having an anger attack, as a consequence he was so sad that he would not eat nor speak.
He was invited to visit Washington city along with the government agent and some members of the leather company, he got sick with smallpox while he was near some hills that now are named after him, and he died few days after.
Before his death, Black Bird told some of his warriors where and how he wanted to be buried.
He was carried on the biggest “bluff” and then he was put on his favorite white horse that was buried alive with him. All the members of the tribe and the tribe’s agent were present while Black Bird was buried with a bow, shield, arrows, a pipe, a medicine-bag, a bag full of tobacco, a lighter, and some dried meat that could be useful for his journey to “the regions where his ancestors’ shadows hunt”. Eagles’ feathers decorated his head, and some scalps were hanging from the horse’s bridle.
After the medicine-men finished the ceremonies, each warrior painted his hand red and left a handprint on the sacred horse’s mantle, they covered both the horse and the man with soil.
